A Conversation for The 1960s - an Introduction

The 1960s was a smashing time for TV - Doctor Who, the Avengers, Z Cars, The Prisoner - it really marked the turning point from the 'Ally Pally' broadcasts of the 1950s into regioanl accents, kitchen sink dramas and a better representation of the world we live in.

I love the comedy of the sixties. Though the main product of the Peter Cook-led satire boom was the now faintly embarrassing That Was the Week that Was we did have the gorgeous Not Only But Also (if only more of it was left!) and Monty Python's Flying Circus. Which I do believe we have an Entry or two about...
And then there was the music television... [goes into rant about how the Dave Clark Five WEREN'T actually the biggest band of the '60s despite the impression given by the released Ready Steady Go footage owned by...Dave Clark]

Gah - you beat me to it, Jimster
Also, Python started in the 60s (admittedly by only 87 days...).
TW3 was 1960s as well.
Natalie, my neighbours hate you!

Your posting (with its airborne sort of theme) makes me want go home and put Simon Dupree's 'Kites' on at full volume.
So my neighbours will hate you!
However, one of them shouts 'Go girl' at 'Trisha' every morning so I think it's fair.
Let´s get airborne!

LOL that was my second choice after 'Kites'! Bah bah bah bah bah bah baaahhhh.
Aw there's no highly-orchestrated Easy Listening in this office.
Now, what kind of office is that?

BBC has quite a reputation for loudspeaker research! If all things fail, find someone who can glue some plywood together - an excellent pair of speakers will drain some 70 quid out of the tea kitty.

Strangely my first memory of '60's televion was the quiz shows.
Michael Miles and Open The Box - (Remember the Yes/No Interlude ? No ? BONG!)
Hughie Green's Double Your Money
Bob Monkhouse - not on a quiz show, but on Candid Camera.
Billy Cotton's Band Box ? Wakey Wakey.
And a cartooon favourite - The Wacky Races. Muttley's Shee Shee Shee laugh still escapes my lips today as I indulge in a spot of shadenfreud.

One I have never seen repeated since then was the Telly Goons a puppet animation of the radio shows. That used to be on Saturday just before Doctor Who when it first started. Why is it not on Cable now??
Do Not Adjust Your Set and At Last the 1948 Show were also required watching of the day.

Would that be Andrew Pixley's article in Doctor Who magazine, Alicia? I've been reading that too - fascinating to see how the fragmented network of ITV stopped them from getting a better foothold on the rations, yet as soon as they all agreed to show the same programme at the same time, they wiped the floor with the Beeb.
