A Conversation for Talking Point: Bad Food

Durian Fruit

Durian Fruit, decscribed in South East Asia as the 'King of Fruit', smells like something that has crawled into a damp place to die. I tried it in Malaysia because a friend said that I would never manage to eat any. I managed, but it was a close-run thing.

It's large, green and spiny. The smell of rotting meat is so intense that it's banned in taxis, buses and other public areas in some parts of Asia. To many locals its a delicacy. I'm told that the taste is sweet, creamy, and somewhat custard-like. However, when I put a lump in my mouth it was all I could do to bite down a gag reflex. It may have tasted like ambrosia for all I knew; the smell was just vile.
