A Conversation for Talking Point: Giving Away the End

I know that this is major "spoiler alert" zone already, but if you're a Harry Potter fan, proceed with caution. Because I know that this is a major SPOILER ALERT. If not, just read on and laugh at my rantings.
I shan't go spoiling the ending of the 3rd book (and subsequent film adaptation) because it was so good, but I will spoil one thing, by way of story, from the most recent book, "The Order of the Phoenix". And I haven't even read the damned thing.
At a friend's place, watching the football (read, "Rugby League"), I noticed his girlfriend, Renee, not especially social on account of not being a fan of the footy, but being a huge fan of her boyfriend. She's also a big fan of Harry Potter, and since the book had recently been released, I decided to involve her in the conversation.
"What did you think of the latest Harry Potter book?" I said.
"I finished it the other day," she began.
Then my other friend, Todd, decided to ask one of the most stupid -- to me, at least -- loaded questions I've ever heard: "Who dies in it?"
Before she could utter a word, I spun around, pointed at her and practically yelled in a huge voice, "Don't answer that! DO NOT answer that!"
"...sirius..."
Holy hellfire, was I ever peeved. To fully appreciate that sentence, substitute and insert as many expletives as you dare, then several more.
Part of the problem is that Todd has an apalling memory, and he's always ignorant of characters' (and even a lot of peoples') names in any case, so he forgot about it in a matter of hours. It probably helps that he's not a huge fan of the series (just the terrible movies).
But I think that the bigger problem is that the author, J.K. Rowling, made the error of letting slip that a particular, unnamed character buys it during the course of the story. The media subsequently went crazy, regurgitating this morself of story until the most anticipated book in history was whipped up into a major hype.
So anyway, who do I blame? Do I blame Todd for his supremely ill-considered loaded question? Or do I blame Renee for dropping the bombshell after I (most extremely) directly told her not to say. Or do I just stop whining and get over it and read the book and enjoy it for its content, not its one big selling point?
But before you answer that, consider this: when Renee got the book on the day it was released, the first thing she did was open it up to the final page and read the end of the story first.......
