How far can "manknind" progress

What has happened so far and will continue to happen throughout the existence of mankind on this one planet (we don't know if we are anywhere else yet!) is that "we" have through genetics progressed to "modern day man" and the (leaves open
) intelligence levels so far reached.
But! due to knowledge of DNA and genetic manipulation, we could end up producing a myriad of lifeforms (human or none human - or both combined) that would outdo any number of creations shown on Star Trek/Star Wars/Babylon 5 and many many other sci-fi films/programs.
If mankind can think it! he'll try it! because it's the "unknown" and "he" needs to know.
Whether it be a good thing or a bad outcome - "I" want to know what is behind that door, because it's there!
