Restraunts get michelin stars for their food - 1 good, 2 better, 3 even better.
Okay I understand the concept thus far.
Michelin sell rubber.
1 star = good rubber
3 star = the best rubber
Hmmmmmm - I want to find somewhere to eat because tonight I am too lazy to cook myself - better go to 1 star because that is only rubber not 3 star which is more rubbery than rubber on a rubber planet on a rubber day.
I will never forget a meal I had in a pub that sold food. This was a pub on the beach front with children running riot - you know the sort of place that no food critic would park near let alone eat in. We ordered steak & chips, the meal arrived with steak knife wrapped in napkin. I was half way through the meal when I realised I was using the normal knife to cut the meat and not the steak knife. Cost of meal less than £10. I wish I could buy meat from the supermarket that was that tender.
Oh - Duh! did I mention - they had no michilin stars?

Hm... They do cover a pretty massive range, but they are measuring (nowadays) only the 'best of the best' and that sort of covers atmosphere and environment as well. It might not work for everyone but I'll bet it works for everyone who wants to pay £15 for a starter of force fed goose liver and veal on a parmesan and truffle foam with an accompaniment of squid ink tea to cleanse the wallet.
I'm not convinced there's room in the guide for real food for real people with real families at real prices. Get the AA guide, I'll bet it's far more to your liking, and if you like a place enough, write to a guide and let them know to try it out!
