I Can assure you we are not all well educated 5 GCSEs and not one a C or above however if you have a valid point of view on something there are a lot of people who will be happy to debate it with you however it become a different matter when people go onto these threads spouting mindless dribble being obnoxious or spamming (this is meant in general not aimed at you) stick with it

Andy, since when have we not been allowed to put email addresses? The House Rules only say be careful about posting them as they can attract spam or unwanted attention. I thought it was only if we posted other peoples personal details that it became a problem for the Beeb.

My email has been on my personal space for years and nobody has ever complained. Is this a new BBC thing

dale, you are hard work, and some need a little more tolerance to understand you, others can't be bothered, try shorter posts and not posting multiple times, you are trying to get an entire conversation in just one post and end up comming across as manic

You should remember that hootoo is a lot like Real Life - you will meet some people that you click with immediately and others will just make you want to run in the opposite direction . There will also be people who might not like you as much as you like them - that's life.

What Taff said is true - it's all about give and take If you give too much though you come across as "needy" - let people contribute, it must be a two way deal.

If someone upsets you it's better to walk away, think about your response and then think again about the consequences of what you are about to say, then think again and then, if you must you can respond. Remember, no one knows when you read the message so you really can be "spontaneous" in delay Maybe this is good advice for all of us

Please stay - but calm down and take it slow ... sometimes it takes a while to "get the hang" of fitting in.

Can I add to this? Pretty much everyone here is (or at least appears ) to be better educated and better informed than me... But almost everyone is more than willing to help you to learn and understand. Perhaps not in the middle of a flow of conversation, but they will be more than happy to try and point you in the direction of, if not the answers you want or solutions you're after, but where to find them!

I've no idea who you are either, but there may be several explanations.

a. Some people who are posting do not have English as a first language and they may sound more critical than they intend to. These become fewer and fewer as their English improves, but bear with them.

b. Even some native speakers just use English differently and you are interpreting their well-meant words to mean something negative. (I am often surprised at some reactions to what seem to me perfectly harmless postings)

c. In a hurry, sometimes things slip out that, on second reading, can be hurtful or sound arrogant. But the poster forgot the "second reading" and regretted it afterwards.

d. If, as has been suggested above, your posts tend to be too long, try and break them up or just make one point at a time. You probably don't always have the time or the concentration to read reams of writing yourself, especially not if it's all crammed into one paragraph. Write something that you know you would enjoy reading.

e. Don't give up on H2G2. It is full of nice, well-meaning people. Someone will come along and rescue you. It's probably more helpful than most other forums in this respect.

f. Especially don't give up on yourself if you think you aren't as well educated as others here. That's never been a basis for a hierarchy. As in real life, everyone has their own area of expertise. So we all help each other. You've made the first step by coming here - be prepared to learn from the other contributors.

I hope this doesn't sound condescending. I have no bone to pick with you, as I said, I don't know you.

You keep posting the fact that you can't get on via digibox, but you can by mobile and that using mobile hasn't helped your getting over to SSO.

I always get to the end of whichever word is giving me a problem and then wonder whether its an "s" or a "c" the other one was "ise" or "ize" but I no e know its "ise" for English.

I know that too, but it often feels wrong when I'm writing it. Which is difficult because I'm an apostrophe fascist among other things... But could well be letting the side down quite dramatically .

Just apostrophes. I'm terrible with grammar. Some of the subtleties I just cant see and others I just dont find that important. I write how I think, which is almost how I speak but not quite. Another thing I find difficult to cope with is context, or lack of. weather or not people want to try and construct proper sentence's is totaly up 2 them but thay shuld understand how there writting come's a cross.

I got terribly upset the other day while reading the BBC news website. People's comments on an article made me quite sad. Regional spellings, unstructured sentences, lack of punctuation...

Phonetics are great for teaching reading and writing, but when people aren't moving beyond that to understanding that there's a common way to spell words, no matter what region you come from, then I think there's an educational failing.

I do also know that a percentage of people who dont express themselves well in written words are dyslexic or are using english as a foreign language. I think I'm very much spoiled on that front though, all the weirdo foreign types on here are incredibly well educated!

There's a few where I'm not such a fascist (as you can see! ) which is where they are replacing missing letters on things like dont, arent, etc.
