As the field guides do, we will start with the Divers. (Gaviidae)
change to something like
As is the custom in field guides, first section the Divers. (Gaviidae)

I'm a new kid on the block. Read your article from top to bottom. As an article named "The Gull Family and Other Seabirds" I thought you could bulk up hugely on the information provided on the 'gull' family. Since (I assume) your target market is people who currently know nothing and might like to, you need to take that on board as you develop the paper. Myself, I always try to establish beak colour and leg colour as primary identifiers, then beak shape, body shape, specific colouration and finally likely habitat. For instance which gulls frequent dumps? Which gulls follow fishing boats? Which gulls sit on chimney pots and give off? I was fascinated at your observation that the Glaucous is only seen on the east coast. The only glaucous I've ever seen was at Tynemouth.
Did I miss the Little Egret which is now such a regular estuary bird throughout Britain? Also Puffins and Manx Shearwaters? or did I miss them? Best of luck with the work.
