Early last year, I went to see the winning pictures in the Wellcome Image Awards. Each entry is a piece of 'scientific art'. They are generally produced using microscopes - some are artificially coloured in order to bring out a particular aspect of the science.
Well, this year's winners have been announced, and they're fascinating as always. The gallery is here: http://www.wellcomeimageawards.org/index.htm#
You'll find a BBC slideshow with running commentary here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12538048
If you want to go and see the images when you're in London, then you'll find them at the Wellcome Collection in Euston Road: http://www.wellcomecollection.org/visit-us.aspx Admission is free. The rest of the museum is well worth a couple of hours of your time, too.

Truly amazing. Thanks for letting us in on it.
What a demonstration - if such we needed - that the natural world is beautiful in its symmetry at all levels of resolution.

Thanks for sharing this, Icy. Truly awesome. Best thing a pharmaceutical company sponsored in a long time. I wish I could see the exibit.

Glad you enjoyed it
The gift shop there makes good use of the images, as you might expect. I have a very colourful diatom on a fridge magnet

For some odd reason, I forgot to post my annual journal about the Wellcome Image awards last year. The 2012 exhibition is over now, but you can still see the winners online at http://www.wellcomecollection.org/whats-on/exhibitions/wellcome-image-awards-2012.aspx
My favourite is the one of caffeine crystals, which look like shredded rhubarb.
I'm keeping an eye out for the 2013 competition - I'll post a journal when I see it.

Thanks for reminding us of this, Icy. I agree with you that those caffeine crystals are really stunning.

I must try to visit the exhibition again this year. I work about 20 minutes walk from it, so there's no excuse. The museum's wonderfully macabre too - full of relics from surgery through the ages, with some that probably belong in a torture chamber.
And it's free.

Well, I'd pass on that one. I get uncomfortable when 'last remains' of humans are displayed. I think that it is disrespectful ----even all of those over thousand year old mummies DO NOT DESERVE to be sideshow exibits. But that is just me.

I think there's a bit more art than science in some of these, to be honest, but it's still an amazing set of pictures to make you think.
