Some of this thread has reminded me of Red Dwarf:
Lister using a hammer on his socks to get them clean
and Lister leaving his socks in an airlock and the ship's computer mistaking them for a new life form!
RF's safety pin idea works for me (me being someone who does just his own washing) but I think my tucking method is less "fabric intrusive" I'm not sure how it would work when kids are involved. My nieces and nephew have taught me that the best laid plans of mice and men are... screwed up by children!
