there is a small error in pronounciation tables. The letter "a" is pronounced like "u" in "but" or in "fun", but not in "put".

To me, but, fun and put all have the same vowel. Perhaps this is because of my Irish accent. I'll see what the mainly English people at the British English thread think.

Oh dear, it all gets rather complex and regional, doesn't it. In the north of England, 'but' and 'put' would have the same vowel sound as each other, but different to 'fun'.

But accents aside, am I right in guessing that when you say 'but' rather than 'put' you mean it's more of an 'uh' sound than an 'oo' sound?
