He still doesn't get the fact that Peta works for TDV and they hired her to enforce their rules as she sees fit.

Peta did her job. 'nuff said.

Post 103

Amanda

This may not put an end to all of this. And stopping this thread is not the motive behind what I am about to say. It comes from the heart, I promise, and it took me far too long to say...

Loonytunes - I am so very sorry for sparking this thread on your user page. This infringed on your privacy, or what little we have on here. I'm sorry if my words caused you any distress. I hold you in esteem as a fellow researcher and ACE, and I hope that you can accept my apology to you as sincere.

To Peta and Mark and the rest of TDV - I apologize for bringing my personal issues onto your website. I love H2G2 dearly, and I would hate to think that my words might have caused a potential researcher to turn away from here - never to return. In the future, I will try to keep my private issues private and to myself.

Especially to Peta - You are not only a fellow researcher and my H2G2 Team leader... you are also a dear friend. The fact that my words caused you to get dragged down into the mud, to be insulted and to have your authority called into question tears me up. I am so very sorry.

To everyone inbetween - I would hope to consider all of you friends. If anything I said personally offended you or hurt you in anyway, please accept my humblest apologies. All of us visit H2G2 for many different reasons, but one of them does not include having our feelings hurt. I am sorry for doing so to anyone and everyone, and will make sure that I will not do so in the future.

After reading back over what I've had to say in this thread - I realize that much of it came off as derisive and caustic. I should have said what I am saying now a week ago, instead of the rest. And for waiting this long I am truly sorry.

Many tears and lots of love,
Amanda

Thanks.

Post 104

Peta

Thank you Emmy, Amanda ;P and Krissy Lee.

Thanks for your support. As you say, it's my job to ensure that Researchers abide by the terms and conditions. whenever I've had to ask anyone to modify their behaviour in the past it's never been a problem. We know what we like about h2g2 and we want it to stay that way.

Even though I work at h2g2, I'm still part of the community and a Researcher as much as everyone else. Being insulted hurts me too. We're real people here, hey, not part of the machine.

We've all got emotionally entangled in this one. I don't want anyone to feel bad anymore. Let's put all this behind us and learn from it.

Okay everyone. Smiles back... Lets move on. smiley - smiley

Post 105

To me, it seems you're all barking up the wrong tree.

So far no one has mentioned the most serious breach of h2g2 etiquette - where's the Topic Drift??????? Hmmmm?... I thought it was mandatory for any forum with more than 2 posts.

Honestly, I dunno, researchers today - with their long cars & fast hair - not like when I was young, tsssk tsssk

And where's someone trying to set a new site record for the most uses of the phrase 'hoopy frood' in a single posting?smiley - winkeye

Researcher 93445

I know I said I wasn't participating here any more, but I couldn't leave that apology unacknowledged. Thank you, Amanda. I suspect that was hard to write.

In the heat of the moment, I said some things I shouldn't have. Blame my high school debate training, or testosterone overdose, or Mercury being retrograde. I know better, I really do. Airing philosophical differences should not be done by being gratuitously nasty to fellow Researchers.

I'm sorry too for my part in this mess.

Apologies.

Not to be outdone by Amanda I too have reviewed my postings with the benefit of hindsight.

I know I've been accused of saying things and then taking them back without meanig it, which doesn't leave me much room for manouevre does it? This is not for you people. This is for Amanda and Peta: I'm sorry. I was out of line. I'll accept my punishment like a good boy. This will be my last posting for a while.

Now, as I see it:

Amanda has got something off her chest that needed to be said, but the Loony hasn't been punished and has gone off with some of his sheep-shagging brethren to sink a few tubes of the amber nectar.

English Ben has joined them in the boozer, and that guy that was talking so much sense enjoys the blessing of being Dutch, which means he gets to drink real beer.

I've had a good rant and feel better for it, while Peta has the satisfaction of smacking a persistent trouble maker.

Krissy Lee is still celebrating, DNA is a hoopy frood, and, in short, everyone now seems to be fairly happy.

Why did the American cross the road? To join the party and be welcome, even by the Kiwi.

Yet Another Opinion...

Post 114

I once posted in a thread discussing why there are no intelligent, available 16 year old guys; being an intelligent, available 15 year old guy, my message started like this:

*thinks*

*grin* There's very little I can say here without coming off looking daft, is there?

It seems to me like this thread could be viewed in a very similar light; there's not much which can be posted here which could not be viewed as offensive, simply because everything that's gone before is such a tangled mess of possible interpretations.

Consider two people having an argument outside the walls of a forum... one of them gets upset enough, and they leave. Hours, perhaps days later, when both parties have calmed down, matters can probably be resolved. In a forum, that doesn't happen... arguments are long and drawn out, and people have enough time to get really mad about them... in fact, there comes a stage when people are merely looking for bits of postings to throw back at each other. You know things have gotten *really* bad when you start quoting each other...

I used to argue religious matters fairly regularly on usenet... and all I achieved was that I got pretty angry every time I visited the group, because someone had twisted my words to get them to say something I didn't want them to say. I, in all probability, went on to do the same back. I argued long and hard with one individual by e-mail; had I not lost their address, we'd probably still be arguing now.

And, of course, most things take a lot longer to forget than they did to say...

The point is... these things happen, right? A lot of people didn't come off looking too good in the postings above... but that's irrelevant... some words just aren't *meant* to be permanent. And, like it or not, I'm still going to assume that you're all nice people...

That reminds me, I offended someone myself (not on h2g2) a coupla days back... I haven't thought about it since then, but I should really go and apologise. A hard thing to do, but I imagine I'll feel good about it afterwards... right? Much better than being angry with someone...

Lonnytunes - Winter Is Here

I have just read all the recent posts - a lot of sage thinking there.

Amanda's last post is an excellent piece of writing and I would like to offer her a virtual handshake and hug.

For the rest of the forums posters please select one of the principles posted below as my personal peace-offering to you.

Grahame

The Principles of Life!

* If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
* A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.
* Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
* For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.
* He who hesitates is probably right.
* No one is listening until you make a mistake.
* Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view.
* The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.
* The severity of the itch is proportional to the reach.
* To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.
* To succeed in politics, it is often necessary to rise above your principles.
* Two wrongs are only the beginning.
* You never really learn to swear until you learn to drive.
* The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.
* Monday is an awful way to spend 1/7th of your life.
* The sooner you fall behind, the more time you'll have to catch up.
* A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
* If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before.
* Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.
* A fool and his money are soon partying.
* Money can't buy love. But it CAN rent a very close imitation.
* Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.
* Always try to be modest. And be damn proud of it!
* If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.
* Love may be blind, but marriage is a real eye-opener.
* Hell hath no fury like the lawyer of a woman scorned.
* Bills travel through the mail at twice the speed of cheques.
* Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.
* Eagles may soar, but weasels aren't sucked into jet engines.
* Borrow money from pessimists - they don't expect it back.
* Half the people you know are below average.
* 99 percent of lawyers give the rest a bad name.
* A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.
* If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't
for you.
