Air Drummers are a slightly different breed of air instrument aficionados. An air drummer is very likely to be an actual drummer (you can tell the difference because a real drummer will be co-ordinated and have corresponding feet action). The reason for this is as follows. When you hear a piece of music, as a drummer, that you like, can play or just grabs you as being pretty funky it is an involuntary response that follows. I have a friend who is also a drummer and we are occasionally seen playing air duets. Especially to Genesis songs such as 'Turn it on Again' (every drummers favourite).
The key, as a have said, is to watch the feet if the person is sitting down to tell a real drummer to a wannabee!

I admit it.
I'm an air drummer, and even drum to music only I hear in my head. On the bus. Or, if I'm listening to my walkman, I stamp on the floor (or my 'bass') so loud so that I can hear it over the music on my walkman (usually NOFX) that people look round at me.

I agree with the first post. However, I prefer to use 'Dance on a Volcano' as my air drum piece. This is executed rather well as myself and my friend are both well versed in both the studio and live version. The act of both of us playing with simaltainous actions makes us feel less silly, but to other people, look twice as daft...
My air drum kit, has also more drums than a normal one has. This is because by exagerating my actions makes me look like a more plausable drummer to non-drummers.
I also flummox people by actually co-ordinating my feet as well. I am a professional air drummer...

actually, I find air drumming less embarrasing than air guitar, and I'm a guitarist! I guess that with air drums it's a lot easier to fake instrument knowledge. By the way: I use my feet. I'm an experienced air drummer, though I'm still working on that really tricky deathmetal-dubble-bass...

I am a drummer myself, and I prefer to combine the positive aspects of drums consisting of air and those made out of actual hard matter, that means I am often caught slapping my legs or using pieces of furniture in a percussive way. Some people consider this annoying though, so before starting you better scan the surroundings.
(And yes, my head is also buzzing)

101 STUPID THINGS YOU KNEW YOU SHOULD NEVER DO BUT DO ANYWAY:
No. 52: Air drum in the car, whilst driving... At very least, get someone else to hold the wheel whilst attempting to keep up with the Phil Collins and Chester Thompson playing live 'Los Endos' in Paris...
Still... nobody was killed... A duck got maimed and my passengers are mentally scarred for life, though...

Air drumming has developped in me a mild form of kleptomania, whereby I steal the nearest two drumstick-shaped things when the interesting bit of drumming comes into the song. All the biros, spoons, chopsticks etc in the room gravitate towards me while a good song is playing.
I doubt that there are clinics for this anywhere but so far this mildly unsocial behaviour has gone unnoticed...

You know, air drumming can be quite educational if executed properly, and with the right mentor. I used to have an abundance of anti-rythm, but had the opportunity of living with a drummer for six months. Now he didn't have any drums to teach me, so he trained me using air techniques. After six months of dilligent practice and innumerable listenings to the works of the esteemed Beatles, I sat down at a real drum set and shocked myself and unsuspecting cohorts when I actually sounded decent. I endorse airdrumming whole-heartedly.

The best air-drumming album of all time is Nirvana's Nevermind (obviously this is strictly from the point of view of a meat-head non-drummer). With the exception of 2 songs, we are assaulted with a series of fast rock beats with preposterous fills, that we can all pretend we can play.....ROCK ON!!

Bah. Nevermind.
I wouldn't say I was _that_ bowled over by the drumming in it...

I'm not saying it's by any means great (I'm not a drummer, so what do I know). It just gives me the overwhelming urge to beat hell out of the surrounding environment. (Pretend drums that is, not a symptom of any teenage angst the music may bring out in me :D)
