A Conversation for Tips on How to Make Commuting Bearable

Refuse to let delays stress you

Post 1

Titania (gone for lunch)

I go to work by commuter train - and I don't call my boss any more if I'm going to be late, unless I'm going to be *very* late - both he and I know that somehow, winter *always* seem to take the commuter train company by surprise - What? Snow? In the winter? Again? (I live in Sweden - it's not unusual with snow in the winter)

Anyway - there isn't really much of an alternative method of getting to work for me, since I don't own a car - but I see so many people fretting and checking their watches every second minute, and making frenetical calls on their mobiles, and complaining loudly, and...

...and none of these actions will make the train come any sooner - so why not relax - the train will come when it comes, and the sooner you realize that there's nothing you can do about it and stop worrying about it, the better. Don't let a late train - or bus - ruin the rest of your day!

I read somewhere that worry is like a rocking horse - no matter how fast you rock it won't get you anywhere - so true!smiley - smiley

TOO true, and anyway you can only be in one place at any given time, so staysmiley - cool. Its like the car that comes racing up behind you, sits on your back bumpersmiley - grrfor ages, then pulls out to overtake, cuts you up when it pulls back. Hey when you reach the next roundabout or lights, there it is, one car in front of yousmiley - ermwas it worth itsmiley - wah Ah well thats kife in the fast lane!smiley - winkeye

I read in the newspaper about a recent accident at the commuter train station where I get on...smiley - sadface

The doors had already closed, and the train was just starting to move. A young woman, only 22 years old, was obviously desperate to catch the train, because she grabbed hold of the handles.

Now, the only handles I can think of are at either end of each wagon, used by railway staff, and they are nowhere near the doors. At the end of some wagons, there's a small staff cabin, but it's always kept locked if it's empty.

Since the train was already moving, the woman lost her balance and fell down between the platform and the train!smiley - yikes One of the staff was still looking out of his little window, as they always do to make sure no one gets caught in the doors when they close - he quickly pulled the emergency break - but one pair of wheels had already run over her...

Despite an emergency transport to the hospital, the doctors had to amputate both her feet.

Such a tragic accident - and for what? What the smiley - bleep was she in such a hurry for? The trains run every 15 minutes!

How many times do you think she'll regret doing stupid thing like that?
