what exactly is the retrograde motion?

I really want to know as I am totally perplexed.some say some planets have a different way of movement.I mean they have couterclockwise movement.others say that planets begin rotating slowly compared to Earth and that is why we think they move backwards.their movement is defined as retrograde.
