Just curious - some of the areas I've looked at seem pretty quiet, but maybe that's more a reflection on my interests

Well that is not accurate as many accounts are created but never used, there are some ranges skipped and many only contribute to the message boards.
Last time I counted there were some 90 000 researchers who contributed anything to the site.
This year some 600 have been active
