this is my fourth day away from work and back home! home, by which i mean my house in my hometown, and not that grotty little college room in which i reside when i'm at university.
the reason why i'm relaxing back home and not slogging away at the lab is simple: (1) i wanted to celebrate my parents' wedding anniversary with them, and mothers' day with my mum - i'm not sure when i last came home for these two occasions, and (2) i thought that it would be pretty hilarious for me to just suddenly show up at the gate and surprise my folks, never mind that my home is about 900 kilometers away from university.
to make sure that at least my mum would be home on friday (9 may), i phoned her up the night before and asked her if one had to be home to receive express mail. my mum took it to mean that i'd sent her something, and promised to stay home for the next two days. (i'm really, really sorry, mum) ran off to the airport the next day and hopped on the first plane i could get. called my mum again while i was in the taxi, asking her (yes, i know i was being mean) if she'd received her package yet. she guilelessly replied that no, she hadn't, the postman *had* been to our house in the morning but he hadn't called her out, so there was a chance it would come in the afternoon or the next day.
arrived at my house fifteen minutes later, surprising the heck out of my parents (it was lunch time), who had been patiently waiting for the postman.
i'm still not sure when exactly i'm going back yet, though. you see, i only got a one-way ticket...

The story is great. Is there a specific time you need to get back to university or are you on vacation?
I believed ur surprised postman is really succesfull

Same father's day as Farlander.
And my dad's birthday is May 14, so when it's the same as mother's Day my sister and I make them both breakfast in bed.
Labor Day is the first Monday in September. It's a day off, a bank holiday I think, and many people have it off from work. Post offices are closed, I know that much for sure.
But I believe you (Arwen) had a day off recently that we didn't, maybe the same weekend h2g2 ran all the articles about horse racing in HYM.

yep-we have bank holidays on mayday (first monday in may) witsun (end of may/beginning of june) and things like easter monday, christmas day etc. think we had an extra one last year coz of the queens jubilee, and they were talking about putting one in to boost tourism after the foot and mouth crisis, but i'm not sure if they did.

you know.... maybe one of these days, after writing that bartok article, we could get together and write about how the same holidays are celebrated at different times of the year in different parts of the world...

Yes, aren't we?
I will be able to work on the Bartok entry more after school is out or things slow down. All of my teachers are trying to fit in one more project before school lets out (which is actually the fourth quarter project that was planned since the beginning of the year but they all seem to be due at the same time). I will be doing one in French next week on a french invention (pardon me, I meant to say freedom-an ongoing joke in my freedom class about all that french is unpatriotic junk because they wouldn't support certain idiots in their descisions to bomb the hell out of Iraq) and how it will change in the future-I have chosen morphine as my invention. (oh yes, I'm completely innocent, officer. It was for school. I swear) So everyone wants to fit in everything (two of my classes are behind where we're supposed to be) before finals. We have just over 4 weeks left of school now, and teachers are startign to panic. So the workload is kinda heavy, not that bad but I don't have time for doing extra work-type stuff. But maybe one day I'll surprise you with the intro paragraph or something. (that would be easier if I could get someone to let me into the computer lab during study hall, the "class" that I normally don't get anything productive in anyways, but as a freshman I need a pass from a teacher, usually to work specifically on a project assigned for that class, and I have no way of getting one)
So I've been thinking about it, and progresss will be made, but not until school's out.

Farlander Posted May 15, 2003
and how would that be, arwen? lol
it's ok, you two - bartok's not going anywhere (the guy i mean), so it doesn't really matter. besides, i don't think anybody's going to be doing anything on him anytime soon. i'll see if i can tidy things up a bit these few days...

I use h2g2 for school too. It's the first place I stop when I'm doing a research project, to run a search. The edited articles are good to give a general idea of the topic.
