i'd also like to point out that i am NOT adverse to change, as anyone who has visited my page twice in the same week can attest to.

Cakewalker said it best:
"I'm not unhappy that we're given the choice (though I do feel it's insignificant and that a variety of 'skins' on the whole are no substitute for one intelligent and careful design), I am unhappy that what is seen by most to be an asset to h2g2 is less likely to be seen now by new users. It just seems an unnecessary change."

Just keep in mind that not everyone thinks that way, that's all. It's natural that a fair number of people who are current members cite the blue design as a reason for hanging around here, but how many others didn't come back because in their opinion the site was overdesigned, juvenile, whatever they might have thought about it?

Trust me, there are a good number of people (possibly a majority, but I have nothing to point to to back that up, so I shouldn't claim it for sure) who will put content above flashy design provided the design isn't just absolutely horribly executed. Many people prefer dark text on light background as well. This design change won't change my involvement here at all, for instance.

One more element that I just thought of is that this is the web. The only sites that really soldier on with the same designs for years and years are pretty basic info sites, the ones maintained generally by individuals. The h2g2 site design was over a year old, which is pretty damn ancient in web age. smiley - winkeye

Just want to put in a word - I hated the goo, and am permanently converted to alabaster.

Y'all seem to think the new users shouldn't have default alabaster because the goo is "more interesting" - meaning you prefer it?

darn - just previewed this message AGAINsmiley - smiley

and again!!!

What I had said was that the new alabaster looks very professional and not as interesting. But maybe it's because I prefer it- who's to know how I think? What didn't you like about the goo?

I like both of the skins equally much, and want a way to use both at once smiley - smiley

Actually you can use both at once assuming you work in multiple windows like I do. Let's say you want to see your home page in Goo and the other pages in Alabaster. In that case, set your preferences to alabaster and create a link on your home page to 'view that page in goo' (if your home page was U99999 then you'd use:
U99999?skin=classic") and you're set.

I have the codes and some graphics I threw together at http://www.h2g2.com/A357437 . These links that you put on your pages also allow visitors to click and see the page the way you want them to.

Thanks for the info. It doesn't really matter if people see mine in goo or not though because I haven't done anything really cool to it like add pictures or something. But if I want to, I know where to go! smiley - smiley

Yep, I'm with you. I waited a couple of days to make sure I wasn't moaning for moanings sake but I much prefer the old look. It's much easier on the eyes. I don't think I'd spend half as long on here otherwise as the white gives me eye-ache.

My first impression is that it is now so much easier to find your way about the site, if not the forums as some of you suggest. The old skin had too few links on it.

"Something ironic just hit me as I visited one of the articles by one of my alter ego's about Northern Ireland. The new skin's colour scheme has certain political overtones in Northern Ireland, just thought I'd point that out."

I would just like to point out that Blue also has political overtones in British mainland politics, but that doesn't mean I want a red colour scheme smiley - smiley

No it looks a bit green to me. Those that give you the clue. It's a blueish green to sat the least but in the article the title is a very greenish blue puls the gold and the white. Need I say more.
