We all know the search facility is pretty poor, but does it have to be this bad?

I search h2g2 Edited Entries for 'France'. A297083 (France) is 11th on the list. Above it are Entries about the Memphis Belle, the 1982 football World Cup and - top of the list - great Formula One drivers. Only one of the ten above it actually has 'France' in the title!

Yeah, so I'm grumbling again. But it is pretty rubbish, isn't it?

I complain about it pretty much every time I have to sub anything, and then procrastinate about adding links because I can't bear it. It really is terrible.

I've written at least 1 entry because I couldn't find anything on the search, then an entry on the same theme has been pointed out.

Though the France one is annoying. London is a link I use a lot, that isn't in the top ten on the serch for London. I'm not sure how it falls below a bibliography of CS lewis

I started making my own directory of links I regularly use, just because it was easier. I might revive the idea. There's not much to it, but it's here A19568343smiley - ok

"The searched words have a value for the entry, Edited Entries have way more value then unedited, the word in the title also adds value.

One thing not often mentioned is; most recent edited (changed) Entries are more valuable then dusty ones. Perhaps a job for the Curators to dust off some old entries smiley - weird."

Try searching for 'france' from the search box on any page*, rather than the advanced search limited to EG entries, and see what you get smiley - erm

*which presumably is what someone new would be doing. First impressions and all that.

Yes, second page, kea smiley - sadface

TiT, do you mean if I were to change something in the France Entry, it would shoot higher up the list?

Do you ever try the BBC search box? I've found it more useful, just add h2g2 to the search words.

France plus h2g2 brings up 500 pages worth!

It takes a few weeks for newly edited entries to come up in the BBC search engine.

Tit, I've just tried that. Now France has dropped down to the third page, searching by Edited Entries alone...
