Does anyone know the equivalent of the British year system (e.g. "year 8") in the American system? Is it the same as saying "8th grade"?

preschool, kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, 9th grade, 10th grade, 11th grade, 12th grade
thats all of them(note that preschool was not required when I started school but it might be now)

Preschool isn't required - though I believe there are some public preschools to be found.
