The Face of Jizo (Chichi to kuraseba)
Gonzo the Legendary Detective Started conversation Jun 15, 2009
The Face of Jizo is a beautiful film set in Hiroshima three years after the dropping of the first Atom Bomb. Based on a play by Inoue Hisashi, it is the story of a young librarian (played by Rie Miyazawa in the film) who somehow survived the bombing, though she still suffers from radiation sickness, something which very much shapes the way in which she approaches life. It deals with the fear of love, and life, survivor's guilt, and a Father's attempt to heal his daughter's heart, so that she can be free to love. But, there is a secret to be revealed.
When you first see her, she is running home, frightened, in a thunder storm. Her father (played by is hiding in a cupboard, and he tries to calm her fears, the lightning flashes reminding her of the moment when her life so dramatically changed. I will not give a summary of the film, instead I want to recommend that you try to watch of it - preferably with English subtitles, and not in any dubbed form.
