The main character in Nick Hornby’s book High Fidelity, lists as his top 5 foreign language films:

Betty Blue
Subway
Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!
The Vanishing
Diva

It’s not explained how the character arrived at these, but no doubt the choices are supposed to cast light on him as a person. His choice of 5 best ever films leans in another direction, partly because they are all American.

If the book were being written now (it stems from way back in 1995), How similar would the 2003 list would be?
The Vanishing could still be there, because it's still eerily fascinating to watch and deserves its cult status (well I watched it yet again last week!).
But of the others…Subway?
Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! could probably be replaced by Habla con Ella, since there are similarities in the stories’ themes and it’s from the same director.

There are two ways to go from here
– update the book character’s list by substituting in more recent films, or
– write one’s own all-time top 5 foreign language films.

I need to think; maybe someone else would like to make some suggestions?
