A Conversation for The Film Forum

sex and lucia

The film I’ve most liked recently was ‘Sex and Lucia’ - for its intricately woven story of how people’s lives cross; I liked that a lot. Sometimes you don’t know in which part or layer of the story you are, or what’s ‘real’ and what’s not (good usage of the possibilities of film), there are tragedies but the people survive in their own personal, different ways, and there are obsessions and drives, like we all (sometimes secretly) have. Then there’s the sexuality and irreversibility themes of the film, how one can radically alter lives in unpredictable ways, the other unexpectantly proved not true. It’s like real life!

The photography is super, the light in some scenes brilliant, the soundtrack good, and the film has nice, whimsical, symbolic ideas, like an island that floats – that really took my fancy!
Overall I thought it a better, more interesting film than the more acclaimed ‘Habla con Ella’.
