A Conversation for Volunteer to be a Miner - DRAFT
My Dream...

Well my hope anyway. I'd love to help out as a miner. My qualifications, in no specific order, are - I'm always online, always wishing I had something to do- eager- litterate- I can spell - and I already have the word mining in my name.

I am volunteering too, so long as I don't have to have a badge.
Actually my heart is sufficiently in this to have a badge if I have to - I guess it would be confusing for folks if I didn't.

If/when it is an official scheme, then the Editors will select the Miners.
Miners will have to agree to abide by the Miners' Code of Conduct, (which does not yet exist and also of course to the Ts and Cs of the site (which they agreed to when they signed up to the site).
Miners will also have to agree to cast a certain number of votes on entries, and possibly volunteer for extra Gem Polishing (ie subbing) duties.
I have suggested to Ashley that the number of Founder-Miners who will be actively involved before the scheme is up and running is kept to about a dozen or so (if we can find that many mad fools!). The Founder-Miners will have a more complex task because they will also be involved in setting up the scheme.
All of this is in my own head, and subject to discussion. If anyone has any thoughts on this, they are probably best posted in a thread attached to: A957323 rather than in this volunteering thread.
Hope this helps

Well, as soon as there's someone accepting applications, here's mine.

Come on! You two are integral parts, and will obviously be chosen, my application is iffy. Who will be accepting applications? I assume the UG organizers?

Good, we need an actually experienced scout! Only one problem, no one knows who's running this and accepting entries while it's unofficial, but you can still go to rf5 and dig for gems. We're almost at the stage at which point we can nominate. You can still say "This might be good for the UG" because we have to let it simmer for 7 days, and in 7 days it should all be sorted out

For anyone else following this thread Jodan's questions were unanswered elsewhere with the unanswers 'Don't know.'and 'What organisers?'.
But these questions are in hand and you will be got back to.
Don't let the lack of an immediate answer put you off volunteering - finding the answers really is in hand. I can't speak for anyone else who's been involved with this but speaking for myself, the strength of the staff support for the UG has been a surprise. We were setting up a scheme which could run independently of any site support until it had earned that support. Now it looks as though that support will be there from the beginning. Which is fantastic. It means some rethinking and rewording of what we had started however and that's what's happening now.
In the meantime please consider taking part in the discussions we're having to shape the UG. And taking part in the AWW threads will give any would be miner a head start. Besides which there's some realy good stuff there.

ahh, finally someone else says something.
Thank you Waz, I just hate it when I don't know what's going on. That's okay though
And you misquoted me

SEE! yay more UVs, you might want to check the backlog and A957431, A957323 and get out in AWW when you get the chance!

I thought we were just signing up for mining here, or is this the UV page? Nope. But I'll polish some gems too.

"UV" or "Underguide Volunteer" was an earlier and more generic term for the - er - Underguide Volunteers, whose more user-friendly name seems to have become 'Miners'.
ie: UVs = Miners
It also appears that a part of the Miners' duties will be 'Gem Polishing' (ie subbing UG entries).

Jodan, you sound like you need an authority figure to submit to, but the only authorities are you and us. We're setting up this scheme ourselves, and then presenting it to the h2g2 staff to ask if they'll accept it and work with us. At this point, anyone taking part in the discussion of how to organize the Underguide is equally in charge of who gets to join. [Of course, if we all vote not to accept ourselves or to submit to higher authorities for all decisions, this might change. ]
So you have to send a request to yourself asking if you'll allow yourself into the scheme you're organizing!
