Did I mention my entry on the Great Vowel Shift? In it there is a comment that English orthography (spelling) was largely fixed by the advent of the printing press in the 15th century. This is why written English is so different from spoken English; we spell our words as they were pronounced in Shakespeare's time but our spoken language has continued to evolve.
