I don't know about the availability of golden syrup in places like Africa, South America, and Japan, but I imagine you can get it in Australia and New Zealand, and Americans can get it easily (if a little expensively) from either online or local British goods shops, so you might want to go make that suggestion rather than changing the entire recipe

So there isn't a complete lack of golden syrup outside the home counties. Nice to know . I have a lack of experiance in buying golden syrup oversees, so am unaware of its availability.

Quite possibly, but U doesn't get used nearly enough, so I thought I should add it to make it feel happier.

Only one more thing which I think needs clearing up - when I put the corn into the pan I start shaking it vigourously so that the corn doesn't burn on the bottom of the pan
