Lou, my suggestion was to format this in the same kind of style as A329942 Handy Mandarin Chinese Phrases.
As a sub-ed I guess you're pretty familiar with GuideML. Not much fun being given a text entry to format into GML (possibly radically, since tables can be a bit of a pain) as your first subbing job.
I'm not a sub-ed, but I'm sure they are much like Scouts, and other sub-eds will be willing to give you plenty of tips if you ask them.
Good luck

That's okay. Some quite substantial re-ordering and additions, but you have respected the essential content and, importantly, the spirit of the piece.

A couple of minor points. This sentence contains a spelling mistake ("and" instead of "at"):
"Also it became the form of English that most people in mainland Britain would write in (if they could write at all - a very small minority and the time) if they chose English over French and Latin, which were still widely used at the time."
Also, the repetition of "at the time" is unnecessary. One of them can go.

or you could avoid the repetition by keeping "French and Latin, which were still used for many purposes" as in the original.
The phrase "used for many purposes" is precise.English was used for some purposes,French for some purposes,Latin for some purposes. This distinction is not brought out simply by saying they were used "at the time".

This bit should not be in brackets:
"(Pronunciation, where different, is given in brackets - see A980624 )"
And the sentence should end at the word "brackets".
The reference to the A980624 entry should be given seperately.

The brackets are still there in this sentence.
"(Pronunciation, where different, is given in brackets - see A980624 )"
They shouldn't be.And it should be two separate sentences.I am not just being fussy about this.In the present form,it makes no sense, because A980624,whilst an interesting entry in it's own right, and very relevant to the topic of pronunciation, has nothing whatsoever to do with the use of brackets in this entry.

Thanks. I assumed you had already started to make some revisions, hence my surprise to find that the inappropriate brackets were still there. But I see now that you have not yet started.
That's okay. There is, after all, no particular urgency about it.
I am sure we both want to see this entry presented in a form that is coherent and free of spelling mistakes.

Tom
