I've done some quite extensive revisions over the last few days.

Gnomon - time to move on

I didn't think it needed any changes, just someone to pick it. I'll have a look at the new version later.

Okay, this is your 'a Scout has recommended this entry' notice. You can do one of two things here, but will it be:

a) say 'Hey Jimster, I'm done, already!' - in which case I'll accept the recommendation, or will it be:

b) say 'Oi, Jimster - NO!!' - in which case I'll back away and leave you to do whatever you feel you need to.

So, which will it be? BET NOW!!

One or two minor tweaks:

Croation --> Croatian
an hypotheses --> an hypothesis
(or even a hypothesis)
Morte Arthure --> Morte d'Arthure

It looks odd to have brackets around the translation of the the Beowulf passage when it is positioned before the Anglo Saxon. If it comes first, it shouldn't have brackets.

I've fixed all of your notes, Gnomon, except one. "The Alliterative Morte Arthure" is correct. The work is an alliterative poem which is much less well known than the similarly titled prose work by Mallory.

So, okay Jimster, it's ready.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Good Morning Everybody!

I'd like to introduce myself as subeditor for this article, which can be found in a recommended form at A1018577. If you have any comments on the changes I've made at any point just post them below and I'll see what I can do. I won't have any major changes for a while since this is quite a large and meaty article and I need to fully digest it first. smiley - ok

Ok, here's where I report back with the results of my first go at reading and editing this entry. Several points have been raised which I want to ask you, the author, about.

1. Have I changed any facts so that they are inaccurate?

2. I've changed the title to "Oral-Formulaic Theory and 'The Hero on the Beach'", I'd appreciate comments on this one as I have a feeling that it's the wrong way round at the moment.

3. I've already raised the issue of the lexicon used to select words for this article, I will be changing some things soon. One particular word which appears a few times is 'scholarly'. I feeling about this (words fail me...).

4. Can you clarify the reference at the end of the Beowulf quote for me? Could it be in a similar format to that used in the Beowulf article (A994665)?

5. In the second half you persistently put 'theme' in single quotes. Normally I'd remove them after the first usage (where the particular meaning attached to the word is explained), but in this case the whole point is that it turns out _not_ to be a theme in the end. Am I reading this correctly?

6. According to the <./>Subeditors-Guidelines</.>, single quotes are used for the titles of short poems and articles, whilst italics are used for 'poems of book length', could you check a couple in the latter half? (I don't have references right now).

Thanks!

Here we go:

1. no factual problems I can see.

2. I like the new title. It seems to me I had a suggestion that I should write an "Oral-Formulaic Theory" entry sometime. Maybe this can let me put it off a bit longer.

3. We've touched on this already in a general way. "scholarly" > "academic"? "intellectual"? "from the ivory-tower"? "egg-headed"?smiley - biggrin

4. Beowulf lines 562-70a. The little "a" signifies that the quote ends at the hemistich half way through a line.

5. Yes, you are reading it correctly.

6. the Finsburh Fragment should probably be the 'Finnsburh' Fragment. The rest of the works are appropriately marked.

Sorry, that this has taken so long anhaga to get round to finishing off. Just one most question.

There's a rather lengthy bibliography at the end, and I'm not sure whether I'm going to leave it in or not (I'll be asking the subs forum), so I'd welcome your view.

I realized when I put in the bibliography that it was sort of different from the pattern of most entries. I'd be content with whatever you and the subs decide. It'll still be in the original entry if anybody every really wants to go looking.

It might be nice to leave the big book with more information.
