Michel Serres is one of the most prominent historians / philosophers today. There's a whole chapter in this book dedicated to Arab Science.

The PR thread was a fascinating read and I've incorporated some of the points mentioned into the entry (A952832)

- The title was changed to "Islam - an introduction", based on suggestions by Gubernatrix in post 2 and Dr Montague Trout in post 3, which were also supported by Muzaakboy in post 4

- I've added a link to A311077, suggested by GTBacchus in post 16 and Sir Bossel in post 28 (I'd have also liked to have added a link to A633403, but this is unfortunately unedited and does not have an edited/recommended equivalent at present)

- I've used Jimster's phrasing in post 97 about men and women being treated equally in Islam

- I've edited the sentence about the decimal system, based on Hell's suggested alteration in post 90 and Jaez's request for the change to be made in post 107
