when i started reading the X-men comics i somehow found them rather controversial [in a good way] for the time [err quite a while ago... ]... or was i the only one having seen a brilliantly not too disguised anti-racist message in them...?!

later on one of the X-men graphic novels actually hit the nail when the dance teacher told one of her mutant pupils to ignore some yobs comments [calling her "mutie-lover"] and the pupil asked if she would have ignored it if they had say "negro-lover"...
no more kids gloves there... the message had become loud and clear: the X-men stories were a parabol... and those who hated mutants in the marvel universe were the equivalent of the racists [and xenophobes] of this world..

i can't remember the title of that graphic novel... can't even remember how it ends.. but i sure still remember that passage...

on a lighter note, the female members' costumes did look good then as well...

I'm pretty sure that was always at the back of Stan Lee's mind when he started the X-Men way back in the early 60's.

Magneto was always written as a survivor of the Concentration Camps, so it was always an issue that in the front of the readers, even if not directly.

I think thats's a pretty good summation of the X-ethos there, kat. Which is one of the reasons that Nigtcrawler has always been such a great character and become a firm fan favourite.

Personally, i find it very refreshing to see a christian character played straight - he is neither a fool nor a evangelical bible bashing bigot, just a man who has a faith that sees him through life's difficulties.

We should all be so lucky.

blues shark... yep, definitely another hint there...

i didn't remember that bit until the X-men first movie [i was still relatively young when i started to read the X-men comics] and that sure helped understand why magneto chose to fight back that way... i suppose there is a limit to how far someone can go before being p****d off by the persecution and prejudice against themselves and their own people...

the X-factor area [back to the comics there] made me uncomfortable tho'.. was that _really_ needed?!... after all they were able to locate other mutants anyway [with the help of cerebro] without having to go through that subterfuge...
and that didn't help the image of the mutants cause either... their ads asking people to grass on whoever they think was a mutant and all that... [blurred memory there... i hope i'm not slendering the X-factor team... ]

cough cough hehe... i hope that these posts are not going to make people keep away from the X-men comics... so to re-assure anyone who hasn't read them yet... the serious issues are in the background and do not spoil the fun in any ways...

now who wants a fight in the good old marvel tradition?!..

hehe... that was the predictable but fun part of the marvel comics... heroes meet heroes... heroes fight heroes... and eventually fight together against baddies....

how far down memory lane am i going now?!...


it rather sheds a strange light on my cultural influences tho'...
a mixture of french classics and american comics...

Blues Shark NightCrawler has very empathic side to his character where people know that they can come to with their problems and be listened to.

Loup I remember starting to read Marvel comics around the age of 11 when I lived in Plaistow in London. By accident I found a Marvel comic on the Greenwhich Ferry and then I started to buy them and read them. I also bought a few Astrix magazines.

kat... i read asterix and tintin as any self-respecting french kid had to.. but i didn't relate to the characters as much as the X-men... the only two others equaling them in my eyes were daredevil [blind but determined] and batman [hard worker and determined]...

tintin and asterisk were just kids stuff... [i might not be able to go back to france after having said that.. ]

Loup I also watched both on the television. I was watching tv programmes about France (in French) about 7 or 8 years of age. For cartoons my preferance was with Spiderman and later on the Incredible Hulk. I cannot remember the other Marvel cartoon characters.

Got the Daredevil DVD at last..

Ther are two disks in the box and the second one is full of infos about the character and the comic book... great stuff..

The part that really interested me [or the most] was Frank Miller's interview... I like Frank Miller for the work he's done on Batman as, according to me, it's thanks to him that Batman went back to his dark roots...

Frank Miller seems to have a talent/gift in looking to a super-hero from a different angle... He saw that Daredevil was wrongly targeted at a kids audience and brought some maturity into the character...

I noticed that the movie was very much influenced by some of Frank Miller's stories... Two of them spring to mind: "Electra" down to the "i am magic" statement from Bullseye before killing her... and "Re-born" though there is a priest in the movie instead of a nun like in the comic book's version...

Great stuff though...

Anyone wanting to see what comic books should really be about should read some of Frank Miller's stuff...

Kat... If you can find any of these titles that will give you some ideas of why i like Frank Miller's work:

"The Dark Knight returns"... Batman is over 40 there and Robin is a girl... Interesting stuff with Green Arrow as a guest star and of course Superman [if i'm not confusing with another graphic novel...].

"Batman: Year one"... Kinda remake of the origins of Batman...

"Re-born"... The best ever Daredevil story... probably...

"Electra"... Another great graphic novel...

He's done some work on Iron Man as well if i remember well...

Girl’s comics - Tammy

Comics that merged with Tammy: were Sally, Pixie, Sandie, June, Misty, Jinty and Princess. Then later on Tammy herself combined with Girl.

Sally (1971) was the first to merge with Tammy, during Tammy's own first year in 1971. Sally brought Cat Girl to Tammy. Cathy becomes a super champion named Cat Girl when she finds a magic cat outfit in a small box (from a grateful African witch doctor). Since her dad is private detective, Cat Girl covertly helps him with his cases, as well as pursuing cases of her own.
Sandie (1973) brought "Wee Sue" to Tammy. Sue Strong makes up for in intelligence what she lacks in height. Most often her intelligence are pitted against her sullen, conceited, bullying teacher, Miss Bigger.

June (1974) brought in Bessie Bunter and the Storyteller, who told eerie stories to Tammy. Bessie and the Storyteller had earlier came to June from School Friend. The Tammy and June coalition saw the debut of Bella Barlow, the character to compete with Molly Mills for the longest-running Tammy character.

&#61623; Misty (1980) - as I noted in the Misty section, Misty didn't bring much to Tammy other than a cartoon witch, Miss T, who joined Edie in Tammy.
&#61623; Jinty (1981) - the Tammy & Jinty merger began to spell the end for Molly Mills, Bessie Bunter and the Storyteller. It also spelled the end for Gypsy Rose, Jinty's teller of spooky stories and "Tansy of Jubilee Street" who came to Jinty from Penny. Snoopa, who also came to Jinty from Penny, joined Miss T and Edie.

The main legacy of the merger was the arrival of "Pam of Pond Hill" from Jinty. Grange Hill inspired Pond Hill, and its heroine was the first-year Pam Watts. Pam tells sagas of what happened when she was a first year pupil. Her stories revolved around family predicaments, school life and the sporadic dispute with Wormsley Comprehensive, which hated Pond Hill for no obvious purpose.

In one classic Pond Hill story, Pam's class is taken in at the snobby St Dorrit's when the foundations of Pond Hill become unstable. However the Dorrit’s pupils (and principal) are too snobby to have anything to do with the Pond Hill pupils, who find themselves the object of cruel practical jokes. When Pond Hill re-opens, the pupils take retribution on the Dorrit clique by deceiving them into throwing custard pies at the mayoress!

The other main legacy was a fresh draft of artists from Jinty, which saw the improvements in the artwork of Tammy. Characteristically these were Bob Harvey, who drew Pond HiIl, Phil Gascoigne, and the longest-running artist in Jinty, Berrera Gesali and Guy Peeters.

Princess (1984). Princess was a comic that merged with Tammy within a year of her debut, so she could not contribute much to Tammy. The only thing of appeal is that Edie, Miss T and Snoopa were dropped in favour of Princess' cartoon "Sadie in Waiting"

Girl & Tammy (1984) - Tammy vanished abruptly before merging with Girl. "Tammy was on the cover of Girl but it looked like Tammy contributed nothing to Girl.

I would like to know what best places to buy new or old X-men comics or graphic novels. I live in Essex and the nearest place sci-fi shop is The Void in Lakeside and further away at Off World in Romford. I do not want to buy them online.

UnCanny X-Men first published as The X-Men from September 1963 to the present day. It was called The X-Men until 1981. From October 1978 the title Uncanny X-men were used on a irregular basis but by February 1981 it permanently changed it to The Uncanny X-Men. A new series titled X-Men was launched in October 1991. From that on, fans and historians began to designate the pre-1981 issues as The X-Men Vol. 1 or The Uncanny X-Men. The article "The" was officially dropped from the title in 2002. In August 2006 Marvel published the "Uncanny X-Men Annual (vol. 2) No. 1", confusing matters and blurring the distinction of Uncanny vs. X-Men vs. X-Men v2.
