They're so elusive, it's a wonder humankind ever caught them and domesticated them. (Well, not these particular ones, but distant relatives of them...)

They also eat little ducklings and hamburgers. (From my own experience)

I observed the hamburger incident on the grandstand of a rowing match, where the heron snatched a hamburger (patty) from someone's hand (in flight). It looked like it wasn't the first time it did that. So no chips that I know of, but definitely mayonaise and probably onion rings.

There are seagulls in a supermarket nearby (ten miles from the sea, but they can fly). I've seen them eating whatever food had been dropped by shoppers.

We used to get gulls in the parking lot of the Philadelphia Walmart. It was near the Delaware River. We're too far from the sea here - though they must get them in Erie.

Gulls are a menace at our coastal resorts for nicking food from folk
But again when people "dump" food instead of binning it etc, they are teaching/adding to the gulls intelligence
