The front paws are put there just for show. In fact, the lead filled tail easily balances out the weight of the rest of the body, but somebody would probably scream if only the rear paws were contacting anything.
I assume the next picture is taken during the pirouette that followed?

The picture is so rich in detail and interesting effects of light that it could rival a painting by the Dutch old masters (Vermeer, Rembrandt, etc.), though the artifacts shown here might not have existed in the 17th century,
