You took some chances.

With petrol, it's the fumes that burn etc not the actual liquid.
The fumes are just off your skin so as long as you don't let the liquid part start to "dry out" you don't get burnt as such.

NO disrespect to anyone who has ever got burnt of course, but if the flames can be extinguished while in "fume state" less chance of skin suffering bad burns.
