Loved the story. I didn't know the song, having grown up in the (mollycoddled?) South. Any indication of the tune?
The bit about the monks no longer running the ferries should be given more dramatic (comedic) effect IMHO. Not in brackets but as a standalone sentence, nay, paragraph!
