We know the reason: jealousy. This stopped in the late 60s - at which point the adults started whining that they 'couldn't tell the boys and girls apart anymore'.

We had to sit all the adults down and explain that hair length wasn't a recommended tool for gender recognition...

True. And at some point in time, the inkwells became obsolete. So no more dipping of ponytails whatever the gender it was attached to. (I had one too)
