Transgressive writers can be cinematic

"Can you ever forgive me?" managed to be cinematic by showing what was essentially a series of capers. It also had a star who drank too much and was sometimes surly to library staff members .
So, maybe Tolkien's only cinematic fault was that he wasn't transgressive enough. Or, if he had a dark side, he kept it too well hidden.
