“You're the widow of the cyclist who was killed, aren't you?”said Andy
Mel found tears rising in her eyes but blinked them away. “I told you my husband had died.”
Andy reached out and held her hand. “I have some idea of what you've gone through. After all, my Suzanne died. But she had cancer, so at least we had time...”
“Yeah. It was such a shock. One day Darren was fine and the next day he was dead.”
“And the man who knocked him off his bike was Mark Sissons.”
Mel nodded. “I hated him.Still do.”
Andy sighed. “I know Mark. I suppose he used to be an arrogant swine – you know, the sort of man who thinks everything revolves round him. But he's changed since the accident...”
A sudden surge of rage swept over Mel. “But he's still alive and he's got a wife and a son. I've lost everything.”
“So you've been stalking the Sissons. At least Wendy and George.”
“I didn't mean them any harm!” Mel cried.
“Didn't you? Honestly, Mel.”
Mel rose. Although Andy's manner was sympathetic, his questions made her examine the things she had done and the reaons for them. “Can I get that tea?”
In her little kitchen, Mel fumbled with the kettle and nearly scalded herself. She thought she'd understood her motives. But had she been honest with herself, or was she more vindictive than she'd admitted?
She returned to the living room and set two cups down on the table.
“Well?” said Andy.
“I wanted George.”
“But did you think what that would do to Wendy?”
Mel burst into tears. She knew in her heart that, if she had a child and someone had taken it, she would have been devastated.
Andy rose and laid his hand on her back.
