Get my tents from the camping shop, they are way too soggy if you fish them!

I’m afraid there’s no stream anywhere near the location of the picture. There is a stream (the Rythe) on the other side of the village about a mile away, but that’s the closest. In truth, it’s not much better than a ditch in places and a lot of it is channelled underground. This year it mostly dried up due to lack of rain. Otherwise the closest bodies of water are the Mole and the Ember rivers which empty into the Thames two or three miles away.

The place I live styles itself as a ‘village’ though it’s a bit large for that. Though it does only have three roads in and out so it is fairly secluded. It’s also in the London ‘green belt’ which up till now has prevented a lot of new development in the area. Consequently it is quite quiet, for which I’m eternally grateful.

I live about 200 yards from where that pic was taken. Looking in the same direction there’s about half a mile of woods and fields, then the A3 trunk road which gives a constant background hum. Also we are about in line with London airport take off path but as I like aeroplanes that’s not a bother for me. I quite miss the 11am Concorde flight these days.

Behind where the pic was taken is a farm that for the most part puts up horses. The farmhouse is an old brick and timber building and has one of those rare old features between it and the road, which is a dew pond. The farmland stretches out west of there to a hill called Telegraph hill. The farm is (almost) on the old semaphore line from Portsmouth to London. The top of the hill still has the semaphore house, but not the tower.

On the whole, yes, it’s a great place to live.

It is so interesting to learn where people live, and what they see. smiley - magic Who would have thought there was an old semaphore line? Wow.
