Potatoes were once considered exotic. There's a scene in "Elizabeth" where Sir Walter Raleigh presents Queen Elizabeth I with a potato. She looks at it with curiosity, not sure what to do with it.

Sure, more than 150 years after Lizzie's tater tizzy, it took Fritz's draconian measures to get people past their spud phobia. My sister-in-law is Pennsylvania Deutsch, and it's no surprise that her old family recipe is German potato salad.
