Last Friday on my way to work in Southampton I spotted that a life-size statue of a soldier from the Great War had been erected in Bitterne Park. This was a silent and moving memorial to those who died during the war.

Today I went by the one I saw last week and it has been vandalised over the weekend – the head's been ripped clean off. I can't believe people sometimes.

When I cycled by this morning the whole statue has been dug up, leaving only a patch of soil where the soldier once stood.
