About a month ago the Uni held a World Mental Health Day event, which involved promoting the uni's lunchtime clubs for staff. Unfortunately the event was held in the cellar (almost in a locked filing cabinet labelled 'Beware of the Leopard') so the only people there were those who were promoting their own clubs. So I thought I'd go along to a couple. First I tried the Creative Writing club, however when I went they spent a whole hour debating whether or not coffee is masculine and there was nothing to do with writing techniques, so I've not been since. Today I'm trying out the book club ā they meet monthly and I didn't have time to get and read last month's book after the event in time for their last meeting.

I hope you enjoyed the book club. I went to a book club recently myself, as h2g2 was the book under consideration!
Like your creative writing club, the conversation did veer off topic quite quickly, and what discussion there was of the book wasn't very enthusiastic, but I did take the opportunity to promote us here A couple of Entries got good feedback afterwards
The next meeting isn't until next month, but I am quite looking forward to it - it is a friendly group of people and even the off topic discussion was thought-provoking so that was not bad at all

Alas it seems that a rule is that only books available in the local library can be suggested, otherwise that'd be a cunning way to get people to buy the book ā join lots of book clubs and make it the next book they have to read
It went very well, though. I knew or had seen around everyone who was there. The book in questions was 'Mary Reilly' by Valerie Martin, a novel based on A87877886. There has been a film adaptation, but I've not seen it.

Ah, hence you needed the Robert Louis Stevenson novella from the library
Sorry - I didn't mean The Book, I meant the Douglas Adams book His Entry on Tea was well received
That's reassuring that you knew the people there. I knew one of the people in my bookclub, and knew of two others so it was good to put a face to a name, plus I met two new people too so that was a pleasing mix.

Exactly! I'm impressed you remembered my earlier post.
I didn't want to attend having only been familiar with the Hammer film, 'Doctor Jekyll and Sister Hyde' (1971), the BBC 'Jekyll' television series made by Steven Moffat last decade and 'Penny Dreadful'. But I didn't know who would be there, but was reassured by the familiar faces. I only knew one person at the creative writing club and as I said, wasn't impressed by the discussion about the sex of a hot drink. It is a hot drink. You drink it. Anything else is asking to have embarrassing scald burns when you turn up at A&Eā¦
