Very interesting article - I am a knitter, but I was brought up on the cardboard method of making pompoms, so I viewed the machines with suspicion. This Entry very clearly shows how it all works

Oh, thanks, Sasha! I had no idea anybody would actually find this useful. Though since I wrote it, I've made at least a dozen more pompoms...

It's really astounding what kinds of devices people invent. I also was only familiar with the cardboard variant so far. I once made a 30 cm pompom for my cat for Christmas with that method. She loved to rip pompoms apart string by string.
