Entry: Waist Deep in Commie Lies: Janet Greene, the Right's Answer to Joan Baez - A87862747
Author: Dmitri Gheorgheni - U1590784

The internet is so full of fascinating things to learn about...amazingly, I never heard this folk singer when I was growing up...and I watched 'Hootenanny' all the time...and memorised the Lomax/Seeger songbook...

Anyway, I hope you get a kick out of Janet Greene. I sure did.

Thank you for this Entry. It is both informative and entertaining.

I had never heard of Janet Greene before. She seems like an interesting person.
(My Dad is a big Joan Baez fan, though, and had me converted at a young age).

Just one thing though: the very first link (to "Commie Lies") doesn't work for me.

Thanks, SF. smiley - smiley

Try this one. I found another, but refuse to link to it, as it has right-wing rudeness on it. smiley - laugh

I'm not sure what to make of Janet Greene. smiley - erm She seems an unlikely anti-Commie. Was she pushed into it? In which case her final rift with her husband and reinvention looks like a personal triumph smiley - smiley

I wouldn't like to attribute motives to a living person, and the interviewers were equally circumspect, but one does get the feeling that there was persuasion involved - and that Janet definitely changed her mind. smiley - winkeye

On the other hand, she DID later spontaneously compose a song in praise of Ronald Reagan...

Granted I'm at work so I didn't get to hear all the good bits, but it reads well and is terribly interesting.

That was great fun to read smiley - biggrin

I think that the sentence immediately before 'This Machine Kills Fascists' is missing some words at its end.

Speaking of Woody Guthrie, I wonder if 'Guthrie's guitar no longer kills fascists – if it ever did.' isn't ...smiley - erm well, slightly flippant, at least to my ear. Why not something like 'Guthries guitar no longer kills fascists – certainly not literally' or something of that nature. I'm assuming, of course, that he never used his guitar in an El-Kabong kind of way.

Delightful entry smiley - cheers

Thanks for reading.smiley - smiley

I'm not sure which sentence you're referring to. And why is it missing words? (In other words, what's confusing you there?)

I meant to be sarcastic - I find Guthrie's boast that 'this machine kills fascists' needlessly bombastic. I'm also assuming that the average reader is clever enough to figure out that neither this author nor Guthrie was being literal.

Actually, the sentence appears in its entirety now. It must have been a quirk of my browser. Never mind smiley - smiley

I agree that Guthrie's assertion is bombastic, and I defer to your sarcasm.

I've had a chance to listen to Greene's recordings. Good grief - how did I never hear these before? It is to wonder.
