Before 1993, people who had a baby in France could only give them approved first names from a list. Only the official spelling was accepted.
In 1993, though, the law was relaxed. Parents can now name their child whatever they want, provided it doesn't potentially harm the child. Alternate spellings are also allowed.

So basically, the person at the town hall registering the birth can refuse a name if they think it's harmful to the kid. The case is then taken to a judge, who will decide whether the chosen name is acceptable, and suggest another if it isn't.

Tomorrow, I'll tell you about the weird and wonderful names people pick for their kids.
