I read it through too, and could see how much it hurts.
I have had similar events and that sense of failure is bitter indeed.

My consolation is that their pain is over, while we who are left continue to try and make a difference. I am sure you did. And I am sure someone greater than us knows who are the givers and who are the takers. I joke that I'll get my reward in Heaven 
at least, I hope I don't go to the other place
