Purse nests and Cuckoo-dodging

What fascinating lives these little birds lead! And how clever they are that they can outsmart cuckoos! I smiley - love the sound of the purse nest all bound together with spiderweb (I know this is really tough stuff, I cleared my birdtable of it the other day).

This really is a cute little bird, Willem. Thanks for sharing its wonderful nesting habits. I sorta thought cuckoos were bigger birds that this little one but there must be diminutive ones in South Africa.

Willem

Hello again Galaxy Babe and Elektra! Glad you found this interesting. Elektra, Klaas's Cuckoo is one of the smallest cuckoo species, a bit larger than a sparrow ... which is still quite a bit larger than the crombecs. Here is a nice article about them with photos, including a chick being fed by a Cape Batis (another one of its hosts)!
