We have always put safety high on the list of priorities. We both have our life-jackets near at hand, even if they don't show in the photo. I did not start actually using sails until we got to Florida, when I was 11. One thing I didn't mention was listening the thunder rolling from side to side between the hills in a storm, most impressive!
My wife has told me the only time she gets worried on a boat is when I ask her to fetch the Life Jackets

Messing about in boats.
Me, I was hooked by the Swallows and Amazon stories but the childhood trips to the UK Lake District didn't hurt either. Lakes are fab. That picture is what every kid should have.

Until this very night I had not heard of the 'Swallows and Amazon' stories, after a quick peek they appear fantastic.
I hope both Star and Comet will have a chance to command a boat when they are old enough. I know it sounds silly, but it can really build a confidence unlike most young people experience. I might do a piece for the Post on my first voyage on the 'Bar-Maid'
