just a couple of comments -
It might be worth mentioning that the areas you are refering to are on the Isle of Wight
There is a major event in the mid-Fourteenth Century that caused the loss of many villages and spawned many legends - the Black Death. Some elements of the legend such as loss of purity and an evil stranger bring death from abroad may allude to this.
