Ain't folklore grand?

An interesting tell, well told. That said, the first sentence threw me a bit. Are you saying that the river Yar is the remains of the former port of Brading Haven?

Also, in the section on French Raids, should the Newton at the end of the first paragraph be Newtown?

>>In 1377 French and Spanish forces invaded the west Wight, destroying the towns of Yarmouth, Newport and Newtown and besieging Carisbrooke Castle5. Newton never recovered.

Other than that, nicely done.

Yep – you've gotta love folklore. Especially when it contradicts itself, as that shows that chances are, more than one person has contributed to that tale. The Greek myths etc all contradict each other, which is great. The town of Newtown also has a local legend which is all-but identical to that of the pied piper of Hamelin to explain why the town has no people.
I've re-written the first paragraph and corrected the spelling, thankssmiley - ok
