Just avoid it at all costs: it's undoubtedly the worst part of Manchester and I've lived in Longsight and Moss Side. Before about 8am it's fine but after that your best bet is to go around it.
If anyone is coming in via Manky Victoria it's much better to get to Piccadily Gardens via High Street and Shudehill.

What with all the warnings here I'm now totally freaked out.
I'd usually go and explore the area after I've checked in to my hotel, but I'm not sure I'll dare this time.

It's just annoying with the huge crowds, nothing worse than that. Just after 4 years of living in Manchester it got frustrating.
You should go out exploring, Manchester is a great city.

Well, Lufthansa sent me my flight details together with a weather forecast of rain for the whole weekend. That might stop me exploring too much.

But I can only take a limited amount of clothing (especially shoes).

I never made it to Market Street - my feet screamed blue murder after I'd maltreated them on Friday afternoon.
Oh, and it didn't rain once - it hailed.
