I brought a blue towel to my local swimming pool today.

I shall admire the lilac in the garden tomorrow. It is a public holiday here and I won't be going anywhere or seeing anyone so it seems a shame to cut any off if no one will see it. And I shall sit in the garden and read about Tiffany Aching or Sam Vimes or Ponder Stibbons.
On a towel.

What would be an appropriate symbol with which to commemorate Terry Pratchett?
Maybe wearing a lilac, or a tuft of wool?

There's a lot of options, from League of Temperance ribbons to guild badges.

"What would be an appropriate symbol with which to commemorate Terry Pratchett?" {Baron Grim]
Good question. I have a flower garden in my back yard, and I considered buying a figurine of DiscWorld, but I couldn't decide on any of the options I saw.
Apparently you can get a Lego verion of Rincewind's luggage

Mind you, I'd like to own stock in the company that provides Rincewind with his shoes, as he must wear out a good many pairs fleeing from calamity.
What I figured out about Rincewind from reading the DiscWorld books was that there was a good reason why he couldn't cast a spell, yet survived every attempt on his life: he's a magical being. Magical beings *are* magic, so there is no need to *perform* magic.

I believe his remarkable survival was merely The Spell acting in self preservation.

What's this!? http://plus.google.com/111101152609868556485/posts/MMiNumThmvV
If that link doesn't work, it's a post from the h2g2 G+ page declaring:
"#onthisday it is Wear the Lilac Day in honour of Terry Pratchett #terrypratchett http://ow.ly/k1EG30bUxK5 "
Is this a real thing? And if it is, why does it fall on #TowelDay?
Pratchett was born on 28 April, and died on 12 March. Towel Day is arbitrarily set two weeks after the death of DNA on 11 May.
Is it an arbitrary coincidence of two arbitrary memorial days?

'Night Watch' revolves around the events of the Glorious 25th of May, so that is why I imagine 25th May was chosen for Lilac Day, but it does make it awkward trying to celebrate Lilac Day, Towel Day and the 40th Anniversary of the release of 'Star Wars' all on the same day...

I just lost a post where I'd said something like the following:
After consulting the Towel Day FAQ, I learned this:
"And in 2008, following Terry Pratchett's diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, Match It For Pratchett called on fans to wear lilacs on 25 May (the anniversary of the Glorious Revolution of the Twenty-Fifth of May, from Pratchett's Discworld books)."
Geek Pride Day indeed!

To top it off, today happens to be Ascension Day this year - a religious holiday referred to by the German Air Force as 'Jesus Christ Airborne'.

Pierce has the right idea.
I'll see if my lilac towel is clean enough to use. If not, I'll use my Royal Albert Lilac Lane soup bowl. It has toothpaste on it [don't ask!], but I can wash it easily enough.

Ascension Day, Dmitri - that's why we have the day off. (I think I mentioned it in my post somewhere up the thread.
There used to be a pilot's saying "Christi Himmelfahrt lande ich auf dem Roten Platz" - on Ascension Day I shall land in the Red Square. One young chappie actually did that very feat for a lark - in the days of the Iron Curtain. It's probably still a mystery how he got his Cessna past the Russian radars. It's also the stuff Entries are made of. I'll add it to my now very long list of entries to be researched and written.
Here's a wiki page on the subject.

Oh - and there's a (fairly recent?) entry by SashaQ on Towel Day and its simultanaety (how on earth do you spell that?) with Lilac Day.
